About Us
We Know Exactly What We Do, Because We Go and See It
Sawabona Africa is the personal, transparent bridge between German donors and grassroots education
projects in Lesotho and South Africa, run by a small, hands-on team who check that for themselves.
OUR NAME
Sawabona (Sawubona)
“I respect you. I value you. You are important to me.”
This African greeting represents how we honour those we support, and those who support us.
WHY WE EXIST
Not another charity. A trusted funding partner.
“I always wanted to run a charity of my own. Then I moved to Germany and realised what was missing was not another charity. It was a funding partner German donors could trust to go and check, in person, before asking them to give.”
Zilla was born and trained as a lawyer in South Africa, and later studied psychology. She moved to Germany almost twenty years ago, and spent nine of those years at adidas where, alongside her job, she began studying corporate social responsibility. That study was the start of a longer search: what would actually work, if you wanted a German donor’s money to reach a small community project safely, and stay accountable the whole way there. She did not want to start a project of her own. She wanted to be the person in between someone who visits every partner herself, asks hard questions, and stays close enough afterwards to know exactly what happened to every euro. In 2021, that search became a reality – Sawabona Africa e.V.
WHY THIS MATTERS
A Broken System, and It Is Urgent
Three numbers show the scale of the education gap we are working to close, and why we do not believe it can wait.

How We Answer the Two Questions Donors Always Ask
“German donors ask me two things: where exactly does my money go and what did it actually achieve? The first: I visit every partner in person and build trusted relationships. The second is our reporting: Every partner sends back a report on what your donation made possible.
— Zilla, founder
We keep our followers updated via our Newsletters and Social Media channels and report annually on how our donations have impacted lives in the communities we serve.
- Registered German non-profit (e.V.)

- 100% of every donation direct to projects
On the ground with our partners
This is What "We go and See it" Actually Look Like.
Sawabona Africa is physically present at the projects: opening classrooms, cutting ribbons, sitting with the team on the ground. It is not only us: supporters such as Wild Life Culture Tours bring guests to see the work firsthand, too. This is the proof behind every claim on this page.
VOICES FROM OUR COMMUNITY
What our donors say. Real quotes from our supporters, in their own words.
Thank you to our partners
Five grassroots partners, doing the real work.
Sawabona Africa only exists because of the people running these projects every day; Bright Start, PYMA, Help Lesotho, Uthando and Impande. Thank you.
