WHAT BRIGHT START DOES
Support Built Around the Whole Child, Not Just Tuition.
Bright Start gives children from under-resourced communities in Hout Bay (Hangberg and Imizamo Yethu) access to quality, fee-paying schools, then supports them well beyond the classroom. Sponsorship funds a place at one of eleven partner schools across Cape Town, plus academic and personal mentoring, safe transport, health and vision care, uniforms and stationery, school camps and outings, and workshops that help parents stay closely engaged in their child’s education. Bright Start looks at how a child is doing in every part of their life, not only their grades. Every sponsorship covers a combination of the following:
Fee-paying, quality school tuition
School camps and holiday programming
Safe transport to and from school
One-to-one mentorship
Maths and literacy support
Sport, art, swimming, music and dance
Dental and medical care
Parental guidance

HOW CAN YOU HELP
Four Ways to Support Bright Start.
Sponsor a specific child, or support the Tutor Programme. We offer two lighter-touch ways to help Bright Start, pick whichever fits. Whether it’s €10 or €3,500, every contribution reaches a real child in Hout Bay.
SPONSOR A CHILD
Sponsorship is a relationship, not just a transaction, you’ll hear from your child’s school through regular progress reports, and from the child themselves through an annual letter.
FULL SPONSORSHIP
€3,500
/year
≈ €292/month, if you’d rather spread it out
Covers one child’s education completely, tuition, uniforms, camps, transport, mentorship and health care.
You will receive: quarterly progress reports, specialist assessments, thank-you letters, Sawabona Africa
newsletters, an annual prize-giving invite, and, only at this tier, an invitation to a community tour.
PART SPONSORSHIP

assessments, thank-you letters, an annual prize-giving invite, and Sawabona Africa newsletters.
OTHER WAYS TO HELP BRIGHT START
Bright Start Tutor Programme
€270
per child / year
Not a sponsorship of one child, but a donation to the tutor programme itself: dedicated maths and English
tutoring for 50 primary-school children. Give €270 a year toward one child’s place in the programme,
or €3,400 a quarter to cover the programme’s full running costs. There is no minimum, and any other
amount is welcome.
You will receive: a quarterly programme report.
Your choice
of amount
No ongoing commitment, no specific child or programme: just a direct gift to Bright Start, of €25, €50, or whatever feels right.
You will receive: a standard thank-you message and receip
Questions about sponsoring a Bright Start child
Specific to this Project
How long am I committing to?
We recommend a minimum sponsorship of two years, since that is roughly how long meaningful change takes, but Sawabona commits to seeing each sponsored child through to the end of their education regardless of any single sponsor’s circumstances.
Can I stop sponsoring if I need to?
You can pause or end a sponsorship with three months’ notice, so we can plan responsibly for the child’s continued support.
How do I pay?
You can donate monthly, quarterly, or annually, whichever suits you. Sponsorships run through our regular Donate form and can be paid by PayPal, credit card, bank transfer, or SEPA direct debit (Germany only)
I don't live in Germany, can I still support Bright Start? What about the UK?
International donors are welcome. Card, PayPal and international bank transfer all work from outside Germany; only SEPA direct debit is Germany-only. UK donors can also give through Bright Start’s own UK-registered charity, Bright Start Education and Mentorship Programme (charity no. 1193085), which adds Gift Aid to a gift made in pounds. Either way, your support reaches the same children in Hout Bay
Can I meet my Sponsored Child
Yes. We will connect you with the Bright Start team to coordinate a visit.
Does Sawabona Africa take any admin costs on my donation
No 100 % of your sponsorship costs to go Bright Start minus Bank Transfer fees. Bear in mind that PayPal does take a fee, hence we do recommend for larger donations that you pay using EFT.
A story from Bright Start
In 2009, Diego joined the Bright Start Education Support Programme, starting Grade R at Valley Pre-Primary School. Bright Start subsequently supported his education at Kronendal Primary School and Camps Bay High School. Through determination, hard work and consistent support, Diego achieved a distinction in matric, placing him among the Top 20 learners at his school. He went on to study Business and Industrial Psychology at the University of the Western Cape, successfully completing his degree in 2026. Diego’s journey from a young learner in Hangberg to a university graduate demonstrates the lasting impact of education, opportunity and long-term support.
Bright Start is proud to have been part of Diego’s journey and looks forward to seeing what he achieves next.
